About
The “Word Gap” has come to symbolize the gulf that can separate very young children who have rich opportunities for positive early learning experiences from those who do not. Science reveals that early language and literacy skills are important predictors of later success in school—and that as a group, children in families of lower socioeconomic means have fewer skills and know far fewer words than their more privileged peers. ZERO TO THREE has compiled as set of resources, in English and Spanish, to will help families, professionals, and policymakers understand the importance of supporting early language and literacy and how best to do so.

About
The authors of this resource have very skillfully woven solid evidence together with specific practices that can be used to prepare early childhood professionals to support the full participation of Black children and their families. Recommendations are organized thematically (e.g., culturally-responsive practice, high expectations of children) with specific examples provided for implementation at child/family, classroom, program, and system levels. The interpretation of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs vis-à-vis supporting Black children and families is just one of the thought-provoking features of this document.

Please join us for a stroll down “making memory lane” where we will unpack the many ways in which children's books can play a significant role in supporting each and every child and family. In this webinar we'll explore the concepts of mirrors, windows, and sliding doors, selection criteria that enable children to both have their lives reflected and to gain insight to the lives of others. We'll reveal a new checklist for examining books for bias, offer high-quality resources that share Black and Asian experiences, and share ways in which children's books can be used to enhance STEM learning for children with and without disabilities. Access to books in multiple formats and languages will also be part of this look at how to build literacy and learning into an early childhood course or across an early childhood program. About
Many programs have shifted to hybrid or online teaching models for the foreseeable future. This presents unique opportunities and challenges related to fostering relationships and building community and preparing students for virtual teaching and interactions. This session will open with tools and strategies for cultivating instructor-student and student-student relationships. Significant time will be spent on strategies and opportunities to provide college students with supported practice that will enable them to build meaningful connections with both young children and families. A highlight will be the participation of Marie Kohart, a talented early childhood educator who will share examples of ways in which she builds, sustains, and individualizes relationships in a virtual classroom. Strategies suitable for both synchronous and asynchronous environments will be shared.Presenters: Danielle Savory Seggerson (Lansing Community College, Michigan) and Marie Kohart (University of Kansas, Kansas)

Looking to increase the emphasis on playful and intentional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning experiences in your early childhood higher education offerings? This webinar will offer ideas for how to systemically bring a STEM lens to any course. Language/literacy + STEM – yes, please! Family engagement + STEM – of course! And wait until you see how nicely STEM can snuggle into child development, health/safety/nutrition, or practicum courses. The presenters will share tools and examples for meaningfully integrating an emphasis on STEM into courses and field experiences in ways that support each and every child and family.

About
National guidance from multiple sources, including Transforming the Workforce and professional organizations, is consistent in the emphasis on the importance of early childhood educators being well prepared to recognize and address the impact of trauma in themselves, young children, and families. Adverse Childhood Experiences or ACEs is one of the most widely used terms when discussing the traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years) such as experiencing violence, abuse, or neglect. This webinar will unpack what’s important to know about ACEs and share examples of how to integrate opportunities for students to learn and practice this content across different course offerings and field experiences. Registration is now closed for the follow up webinar on February 17, 2022.

About
Tomorrow’s inventors and scientists are today’s curious young children—as long as those children are given ample chances to explore and are guided by adults equipped to support them. STEM Starts Early is the culmination of a deep inquiry supported by the National Science Foundation that aims to better understand the challenges to and opportunities in STEM learning as documented in a review of early childhood education research, policy, and practice and encourages collaboration between pivotal sectors to implement and sustain needed changes. The report features research by the FrameWorks Institute on some common misconceptions around early STEM learning, and how reframing the conversation can help the public overcome these often-problematic ways of thinking, leading to a greater understanding of the importance of prioritizing and investing in STEM learning opportunities for all children. STEM Starts Early provides key recommendations for education leaders, researchers, and policymakers across the country to improve opportunities for children to become confident learners in science, technology, engineering and math.

About
This report from The Center for Childhood Creativity reviewed more than 150 studies and found that young children are capable of developing complex thinking skills before they are able to speak. The report is organized by six research-backed findings, one of which is that children need more play to become strong STEM thinkers (pages 12-16). Practical tips in each section make this a useful resource for families and professionals.

About
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an evidence-based set of ideas and practices that can help early childhood and early childhood special educators to more effectively support the individual learning needs of children. While some faculty members include UDL examples for how to support children with disabilities, this webinar will emphasize how these practices can also support children who are dual language learners, children who are new to a setting, and children who have experienced stress or trauma. Content will include an overview of the components of UDL, share examples of how UDL content could be incorporated in courses or presentations on different topics, and provide resources for learning about or incorporating UDL examples.
