About
The science of child development shows that the foundation for sound mental health is built early in life, as early experiences—which include children’s relationships with parents, caregivers, relatives, teachers, and peers—shape the architecture of the developing brain. Disruptions in this developmental process can impair a child’s capacities for learning and relating to others, with lifelong implications. This summary explains why many costly problems for society, ranging from the failure to complete high school to incarceration, could be dramatically reduced if attention were paid to improving children’s relationships and experiences early in life.

Extensive biological and developmental research shows significant neglect can cause more harm to a young child’s development than overt physical abuse, including subsequent cognitive delays, impairments in executive functioning, and disruptions of the body’s stress response. This video explains why significant deprivation is so harmful in the earliest years of life and why effective interventions are likely to pay significant dividends in better long‐term outcomes in learning, health, and parenting of the next generation.

In 1990, Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop published an essay about the importance of providing young readers with diverse books that reflect the “multicultural nature of the world” in which we live. In the essay, Dr. Bishop coined the phrase “Windows, Mirrors and Sliding Glass Doors” to explain how children see themselves in books and how they can also learn about the lives of others through literature. Dr. Bishop makes the point that it’s crucial for children to view themselves in the books they read. Here are resources for learning more about Dr. Bishop and how she has influenced the early childhood field

This article highlights Walter Gilliam’s findings on the rates of PreK expulsion, including specific findings related to race and gender (e.g., African‐American preschoolers were about twice as likely to be expelled as European American (both Latino and non‐Latino) preschoolers and over five times as likely as Asian‐American pre‐ schoolers; boys were expelled at a rate over 4½ times that of girls). A subsequent study showed that when teachers were supported to use evidence‐based practices that promote children’s social emotional competence expulsion rates went down.

About
National guidance from multiple sources, including Transforming the Workforce and professional organizations, is consistent in the emphasis on the importance of early childhood educators being well prepared to recognize and address the impact of trauma in themselves, young children, and families. Adverse Childhood Experiences or ACEs is one of the most widely used terms when discussing the traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years) such as experiencing violence, abuse, or neglect. This webinar will unpack what’s important to know about ACEs and share examples of how to integrate opportunities for students to learn and practice this content across different course offerings and field experiences. Registration is now closed for the follow up webinar on February 17, 2022.
