Using Your Story to Teach Toolkit

Using family stories to teach can be a powerful tool for instructors and professional development (PD) providers to use. Family stories can help early childhood educators understand how to partner with families in ways that authentically reflect each family’s unique context. This guide from the Early Childhood Personnel Center highlights strategies for supporting families to develop and share their stories in ways that promote family-centered and culturally responsive practices. For instructors and PD providers who have not previously engaged family members to share their stories, the toolkit will be a helpful guide to using respectful and responsive methods. And, while the toolkit was developed to support the families of children with disabilities in sharing their experiences, the steps would also be appropriate when engaging any family to be an instructional resource.
