Based on data from the UTD Texas Schools Project, measures of teacher quality were matched to student performance. Teachers were found to have a large impact on students’ reading and mathematics achievement, although it was less explained by observable teacher characteristics. The authors also suggest that improving teacher quality may be more effective than reducing class sizes.
